Starting in September, Microsoft employees in China will only be able to use iPhones to log into the company’s systems. The authentication step will be required even if the job is performed on a Windows computer.

The information, obtained by the website Bloomberg, It is part of the Secure Future Initiative, a set of standards announced in 2023 aimed at increasing defenses against digital threats. The report mentions that hundreds of employees will be affected by the change.

With politics, Android phones will no longer be accepted to authenticate employee identities at the start of the workday. The measure would be a way to minimize concerns about data leaks or espionage from hardware manufactured in China or alternative app stores aimed at the local public.

According to the news, the employees who do not have an iPhone will receive an iPhone 15 to authenticate. Android phones used for work must be delivered to the collection point located throughout the company’s headquarters.

O Microsoft’s China office contains the company’s largest research and development center outside the US. About 6,000 engineers and scientists work there.

The restriction runs counter to the alleged ban on iPhones from public institutions. In September 2023, the The Wall Street Journal reported that citizens would not even be able to enter federal offices carrying Apple cell phones.

Of course, the ban on Android phones also affects models from local brands, such as Xiaomi and Huawei. These manufacturers have a strong presence in the Chinese market.
