Apple may be working on a version of AirPods equipped with infrared cameras. The IR sensor system would use technology similar to that present in the Face ID receiver included in the iPhone.

The information came from Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst and expert on Apple products. It is in line with an earlier report by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. These new AirPods would be launched in 2026. Foxconn would be the supplier of the camera system, which should equip around 10 million units of the headphones.

With competition in the headphone segment fierce, Apple is reportedly planning to differentiate its devices by introducing a “unique” technology. This would make even more sense if the feature were widely used across its ecosystem. And it seems that’s exactly what the company wants to do.

The built-in IR cameras in the AirPods would be used to enhance “spatial audio,” a feature that would be used in conjunction with Vision Pro. This is an augmented reality-based tool focused on audio. Spatial audio offers greater immersion through head tracking, giving the user a better perception of sound direction.

The new feature would make this experience even better. If the user is watching a movie using Apple’s headset in conjunction with the new AirPods, turning their head in a certain direction would enhance the sound.

The system could also offer the function of controls with gestures in the air, allowing new ways of interacting with the headphones. In this case, Apple has even registered a patent for a similar feature.
