Over the past 25 years, and through numerous technological changes, they have continued to reimagine and expand what Google Search can do, and artificial intelligence is marking a turning point.

They have meticulously refined their leading information quality systems to help you find the best of the web. Plus, they’ve created a knowledge base with billions of facts about people, places, and things so you can get reliable information in the blink of an eye.

Now, with generative AI, search can do more than you ever imagined. So you can ask whatever is on your mind or what you need to do, from research to planning to brainstorming, and Google will do the legwork.

All of this is possible thanks to a new Gemini model customized for Google Search. It brings together Gemini’s advanced features, such as multi-step reasoning, planning, and multimodality, with its best-in-class search systems.

The power of Google Gemini AI

Get answers fast with AI summaries

Sometimes you want a quick answer, but you don’t have time to gather all the information you need. Search will do the work for you with AI summaries. Users have already used AI Summaries billions of times through their Search Labs experiment. They like being able to get both a quick overview of a topic and links to more information. They have found that with AI summaries, people use search more and are more satisfied with the results.

Today, AI Overviews will begin rolling out to everyone in the US, with more countries coming soon. This means that hundreds of millions of users will have access to AI Overview this week, and they hope to bring it to over a billion people by the end of the year. With AI summaries, people visit a greater variety of websites for help with more complex questions. And they see that the links included in the AI summaries receive more clicks than if the page had appeared as a traditional web listing for that query. As they expand this experience, they will continue to focus on sending valuable traffic to publishers and creators. As always, ads will continue to appear in dedicated spaces across the page, with clear labeling to distinguish between organic and sponsored results.

Adjust your AI overview

You’ll soon be able to fine-tune your AI overview with options to simplify the language or break it down into more detail. This can be especially helpful if you’re new to a topic or if you’re trying to simplify something to satisfy your child’s curiosity. This update is coming soon to Search Labs, for English queries in the United States.

Make your questions more complex

Using the multi-step reasoning capabilities of your custom Gemini model, AI summaries will help you with increasingly complex questions. Instead of splitting your question into multiple searches, you can ask your more complex questions, with all the nuances and caveats you have in mind, in one go.

For example, you may be looking for a new yoga or Pilates studio, and you want one that is popular with locals, is well located for your commute, and also offers a discount to new members. Soon, with a single search, you’ll be able to ask something like, “Find the best yoga or Pilates studios in Boston and show me details about their introductory offerings, and how long it takes to walk there from Beacon Hill.”

These multi-step reasoning functions will soon arrive in AI overviews in search labs, for English-language queries in the United States.

Plan ahead

In addition to finding the right answer or information for a complex question, Search can also plan with you. With planning features right in Search, you can get help creating plans for whatever you need, starting with meals and vacations. Search something like “create a 3-day meal plan for a group that’s easy to prepare” and you’ll get a starting point with a wide range of recipes from all over the web.

If you want to change something, you can easily ask for any adjustments you need, such as changing dinner to a vegetarian dish. It’s that easy, Search will personalize your meal plan. You can quickly export your meal plan to Docs or Gmail. Meal and travel planning is now available on Search Labs in English in the US. Later this year, they will add personalization features and more categories like parties, date nights, and workouts.

Explore a results page curated by AI

When you’re looking for new ideas, finding inspiration and considering all your options can take a lot of work. Soon, when you search for ideas, Search will use generative AI to brainstorm with you and create an AI-curated results page that makes it easy to explore. You’ll see useful results categorized under unique, AI-generated headlines, with a wide range of perspectives and content types.

For English searches in the US, you’ll start seeing this new AI-curated search results page when you search for inspiration, starting soon with restaurants and recipes, followed by movies, music, books, hotels, shopping, and more.

Record a video and get help from AI

Search is much more than words in a text box. Often the questions ask about the things we see around us, including moving objects. Thanks to advances in video understanding, they can take visual search to a whole new level, with the ability to ask questions with video.

Maybe you bought a record player at a thrift store, but it doesn’t work when you turn it on and the metal piece with the needle moves unexpectedly. Video search saves you the time and hassle of finding the right words to describe this issue, and you’ll get an AI Summary with steps and resources to fix the issue.

Video search will soon be available to Search Labs users in English in the US, and will expand to more regions over time.

This is just a sample of how they are reimagining Google Search with artificial intelligence, combining the best of today’s Search with the advanced capabilities of the Gemini model. Soon, Google will be in charge of searching, simplifying, researching, planning, brainstorming and much more.

Sign up for Search Labs to be one of the first to try these features and more.
