Released by Apple TV+ in June of this year, Above Suspicion shows prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal) having to deal with the most difficult case of his life. He is accused of being responsible for the death of Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve), a co-worker with whom he had an extramarital affair.

Divided into eight chapters, the production gradually shows that the case is much more complex than we could imagine, involving themes such as obsession, betrayal and the journey of a man in search of power. The material is quite rich and can make someone believe that the story actually happened in real life.

Is Above Suspicion based on a true story?

Despite bringing very realistic elements from the courts and law offices of the city of Chicago, the series that has been successful on Apple TV+ is not based on a real case. Its more realistic side is the result of the work of famous producer David E. Kelly, known for series such as The Pratice, Ally McBeal, Boston Public and Big Little Lies.

In other words, He is quite experienced in creating narratives that, although they seem to have been set in real-world courts, are actually based on fictional elements.. In the case of Above Suspicion, the streaming production is also based on the events of the book of the same name written by Scott Turow and published in 1987.

With the original title “Presumed Innocent”, the work of fiction took great advantage of the fact that, before becoming a writer, Turow also worked for years in the legal world.. Telling a story full of intrigue, the work proved to be a great success right at the time of its publication, even producing a film with Harrison Ford in 1990.

The film is considered a classic

Directed by Alan J. Pakula (Sophie’s Choice, All the President’s Men), the film was highly praised for its lead actor’s performance. It also features names such as Brian Dennhy, Bonnie Bedelia and Raúl Juliá in its cast, who secured an Oscar nomination for Best Picture and the USC Scripter’s Award for their adapted story.

Currently out of the streaming services catalog, the film version of Above Suspicion can be purchased on Prime Video and iTunes. On both services, it costs R$7.90 to rent in HD, while the purchase with the same image quality costs R$19.90.

Although it is not being as praised as the adaptation directed by Pakula, a Apple TV+ series has also proven to be a ratings success, with four of eight episodes now available. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 75% approval rating among critics, which rises to 82% among members of the general public.
