Threads completes one year with 175 million monthly active users

Created by Meta, the social network Threads is about to celebrate its first anniversary. The platform of the company that owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp was officially launched on July 5, 2023.

To celebrate the date, the company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerbergrevealed in a post on the service the current number of monthly active users. According to the businessman, there are 175 million people logging into the platform at least once every 30 days.

Zuckerberg himself commented that the service had 150 million monthly active users in April this year. In February, the estimate was 130 million people.

According to the company, 63% of users post using only text in Threads. However, one in four publications already contains at least one imagewith the use of photos from the camera itself growing every month.

Furthermore, at least in the United States, the most popular topics in tags were posts about photography, literature, and physical activities or the gym. Here, the app’s popularity was high when it was launched: last year, Brazil was the second country with the most downloads of the app, behind only the USA.

App was created to compete with the old Twitter

Threads was developed by Meta as an alternative for fans of microblogging social networks who were dissatisfied with Twitter.

The timing was right: at the time, Elon Musk was promoting a series of changes to the platform, now called X, including the end of the verification badge and the prioritization of paid subscriptions.

The launch of Threads was considered a success: especially due to its immediate integration with Instagram, the service surpassed the number of 100 million users in just five days. However, as the days went by, the number of people logged in dropped dramatically.

Over the months, Meta has been racing to implement some basic features, such as a followers-only feed in July 2023, an optimized web version the following month, and a button to repost other users’ posts.
